The Cardinals entered Saturday with the best record in baseball despite having lost two members of their opening-day rotation to the disabled list. And now, one of their fill-ins might join them.
With the game in progress, no further information is available about the severity or prognosis of the injury until later Saturday night.
Gast, 24, entered Saturday 2-0 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in two starts. He joined the rotation to replace Jake Westbrook, who went on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his elbow. The Cardinals then lost Jaime Garcia for the season; he needs shoulder surgery. To take his spot, the Cardinals elected to go with Tyler Lyons, a 25-year-old lefty.
If Gast goes to the disabled list, it's difficult to foresee what route the Cardinals will take. They have seemed reluctant to promote prized prospect Michael Wacha (4-0, 2.05 ERA at Triple-A Memphis), possibly due to not wanting to start his service time clock. Joe Kelly started 16 games last year, so he could be an option. Seth Maness started four games in Triple-A this season before joining the Cardinals' bullpen, so he could also be an option.
