Ellsbury's five thefts is the highest single-game total in the majors since Carl Crawford, then of the Rays, stole six bases against Ellsbury's Red Sox back in May of 2009.
As the Boston Globe notes, the host Phillies made a nice gesture after the game by sending the record-breaking base over to the Red Sox clubhouse. “It's pretty neat. I wasn't expecting that,” Ellsbury said. “I'll put it in the house.”
Ellsbury, a pending free agent, leads the majors in 2013 with 21 steals (in 23 attempts) and is now batting .268/.337/.372 on the season.
