UPDATE: Strasburg has a right oblique strain and will return to Washington for tests, the Nationals announced. He felt symptoms in his previous start, but tried to gut it out. The Nats are already without Ross Detwiler , so losing Strasburg would put them down two starters.

UPDATE: Strasburg left the game with a muscle issue in his back, reports Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post. Back trouble is no walk in the park, but it is obviously preferable to an arm injury.

Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg was removed from Friday night's start against the Braves for an unknown reason after two innings. He surrendered a solo homer to Freddie Freeman and struck out two in the two innings of work.

The television broadcasts showed Strasburg having an animated conversation with the team's trainers after the second inning. Dan Kolko of MASNSports.com says he was seen "moving his shoulders around a good bit, rocking them up and down and looking uncomfortable. He appeared to be wincing after throwing a pitch at one point."

Strasburg, 24, had Tommy John surgery in 2010. He also missed some time with shoulder inflammation that season. The Nationals have handled him very carefully since drafting him first overall in 2009, understandably. They infamously shut him down after 159 1/3 innings last summer despite World Series aspirations.

In 11 starts coming into Friday, Strasburg went 3-5 with a 2.49 ERA in 72 1/3 innings. He'd struck out 71 against just 21 walks.
