Anthony Bosch, founder of the controversial Biogenesis clinic in South Florida, has agreed to assist MLB's ongoing investigation into the banned-substance pipeline in the region, report T.J. Quinn, Pedro Gomez and Mike Fish of ESPN's Outside the Lines. Bosch's cooperation, confirmed by CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman, will greatly aid MLB's efforts to suspend, among others,
On April 15 of this year, Heyman reported that MLB was pleased with the progress of the investigation, and MLB, of course, has long felt it has a strong case against -- and realistic designs on disciplining -- the players involved. Heyman also classifies Bosch's cooperation as a "major break in the case." However, any kind of endgame could still be weeks away. It's believed that MLB has not at this time received any testimony from Bosch, only the agreement to provide testimony. Heyman also adds that it's not known whether Bosch has yet confirmed any names linked to Biogenesis.
According to OTL, MLB, emboldened by Bosch's cooperation, will move to suspend roughly 20 players who have been named in various leaked Biogenesis documents and otherwise linked to the clinic during the course of the investigation.
As for Rodriguez and Braun, the penalties could be stiff. Quinn, Gomez and Fish write:
One source familiar with the case said the commissioner's office might seek 100-game suspensions for Rodriguez, Braun and other players, the penalty for a second doping offense. The argument, the source said, is that the players' connection to Bosch constitutes one offense, and previous statements to MLB officials denying any such connection or the use of PEDs constitute another. Bosch and his attorneys did not return several calls. MLB officials refused to comment when reached Tuesday.
Rodriguez, of course, admitted to using PEDs periodically from 2001 through 2003, and Braun in early 2012 had a 50-game suspension overturned because of improper handling of his urine sample. (A sample on one occasion tested positive for elevated testosterone.)
Both Rodriguez and Braun were named in Biogenesis clinic records.
