Major League Baseball announced Wednesday that the Dodgers and Diamondbacks will open the 2014 season with a series in Australia.

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks will play a pair of games at the Sydney Cricket Ground on March 22 and March 23 of next year.

"The globalization of our game continues to be paramount to Major League Baseball," commissioner Bug Selig said, "and Australia is an essential part of our long-term efforts to grow the sport. We look forward to writing an exciting new chapter in international baseball history at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground next March."

"This is a significant win for Sydney and again delivers on my election commitment to bring major events to NSW (state of New South Wales)," NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell said. "It's estimated the matches will deliver a $13 million benefit for the local economy, as well as attract visitors from interstate and overseas."

Sports Minister Graham Annesley said the Sydney Cricket Ground will be modified to include "an infield clay area, pitcher's mound, dugouts and additional grandstand."

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks, of course, engaged in a fairly intense "beanball" war on Tuesday night.
