Washington Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg has been on the shelf since leaving his May 31 start with a strained muscle in his lower back. But he only needed a short stay on the disabled list because he'll return Sunday against the Indians in Cleveland.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson told reporters (MLB.com) that Strasburg was cleared to start after a bullpen session Thursday in Colorado. Earlier this week, Strasburg threw a four-inning simulated game.

Strasburg, 24, has made 12 starts this season and is 3-5 with a 2.54 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings this season.

The Nationals also got Ross Detwiler off the disabled list to make a start Thursday, so their opening-day rotation will be back intact Sunday.
