The Cardinals announced Friday afternoon that Jake Westbrook has been activated from the disabled list and will start against the Marlins on Friday night. He had been on the disabled list since June 9 with right elbow inflammation.

The corresponding move was to send highly-touted pitching prospect Michael Wacha back to Triple-A Memphis.

Wacha, 21, was 1-0 with a 4.58 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 14 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings in his first big-league stint. He had two good starts and one shellacking (10 H, 6 ER in 4 2/3 IP against Arizona). So now he heads back to Memphis for more seasoning, and he's been dominant there. In nine Triple-A starts, Wacha is 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA, 0.95 WHIP.

Many clubs would have stuck with Wacha, but the Cardinals sport baseball's best record and tons of pitching depth, so they can hold down his service time.

Westbrook, 35, is 2-1 with a 1.62 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in six starts this season. He joins Adam Wainwright, Lance Lynn, Shelby Miller and Tyler Lyons in the rotation.
