Indians first baseman Nick Swisher has had a cortisone shot in his ailing left shoulder and will miss the next three games, reports the Associated Press. The injection came after Swisher's MRI revealed no structural damage.

The Indians are hoping to get Swisher back Friday against the Twins, but if the shoulder doesn't improve, it's possible Swisher will be placed on the DL.

"[Putting Swisher on the DL] is not our first choice," manager Terry Francona told reporters (AP).

Swisher, 32, is hitting .237/.337/.402 with 14 doubles, seven homers and 24 RBI. In his last 18 games, he has hit just .134/.237/.149 with only one extra-base hit, so a decent amount of the reason for his poor batting average and slugging percentage is likely the shoulder.

Swisher signed a four-year, $56 million deal with the Indians this past offseason.
