Before Monday night, the only thing Will Venable and Jim Edmonds had in common is that they are both left-handed hitting outfielders who started their careers in Southern California. Then, in the 12th inning against the Giants on Monday, Venable made a vintage Edmonds-esque catch:
That was a legitimate game-saving catch. Bottom of the 12th, two outs, man on second ... if that ball goes over Venable's head or clanks off his glove, San Francisco wins via walk-off. Instead, the game continued and the Padres won in the 13th inning, their seventh straight win. Remarkable catch.
San Diego is 36-34 and one game back of the Diamondbacks in the NL West. It's the first time the Padres have been two games over .500 since April 6, 2011, when they were 3-1 four games into the season.
