On Tuesday, the Red Sox made some unwelcome changes to the active roster when they placed right-hander Clay Buchholz on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 9 and catcher David Ross on the seven-day DL set aside for concussion sufferers.

Buchholz, who hasn't pitched since June 8, is dealing with a neck strain. The 28-year-old is 9-0 with a majors-leading 1.71 ERA. For his career, Buchholz owns an ERA+ of 121 across parts of seven seasons. Buchholz is eligible to come off the DL as soon as June 24.

Ross was struck on the head by a foul ball over the weekend. Last month he suffered a similar injury, again the result of being struck by a foul tip. This season, the 36-year-old is batting .185/.274/.400. With a career batting line of .236/.322/.443, Ross has long been regarded as one of the top backup catchers in the game.

To replace Buchholz and Ross on the 25-man roster, the Sox have recalled catcher Ryan Lavarnaway and reliever Alex Wilson.

As Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald notes, Allen Webster is likely to take Buchholz's turn against the Tigers on Saturday.
