The Red Sox and seventh overall pick Trey Ball have reached a contract agreement, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Alex Speier of WEEI.com says the signing bonus is expected to be below the $3.246 million slot value.
Ball, who turns 18 later this month, is a left-hander out of New Castle (Ind.) Chrysler High School. He was also considered a top prospect as an outfielder, but Boston selected him as a pitcher, and the consensus is he has a brighter future on the mound.
In their pre-draft scouting report, Baseball America said Ball "has a fast arm and a clean arm action, and in a rarity for a high school arm, he has no obvious red flags." The southpaw was committed to the University of Texas.
