The Mets have placed left-hander Jon Niese on the disabled list because of recurring shoulder problems. Niese was forced to exit his Thursday start, an eventual win over the Braves. More details from Newsday's Marc Carig:
Partial rotator cuff tear for Niese; no surgery on table yet. Not a significant tear, Ricco said. Look again in 2 weeks.— Marc Carig (@MarcCarig) June 21, 2013
While there's no mention of any worst-case scenario yet, anything having to do with the rotator cuff is concerning news, to say the least. Late last month, Niese was sidelined with neck and shoulder issues. Before that, he'd never had any notable arm problems.
This season, Niese has pitched to a 4.32 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 1.48 K/BB ratio. He did, however, look much better after returning from his initial injury.
Niese is in the second year of a contract that will pay him at least $26.5 million through 2016.
