In the top of the second inning, Orioles slugger Chris Davis struck out against Blue Jays starting pitcher R.A. Dickey. It was pretty clear that Davis did not foul the ball off, but home plate umpire Angel Hernandez initially ruled it foul. And then, after conferring with the rest of his crew, Hernandez ruled Davis out on a strikeout.
Here's the video, including the excellent effort of Orioles skipper Buck Showalter to pretty clearly get intentionally ejected:
Again, it's clear Davis didn't get a piece of that pitch. Even Davis himself knew it, as he immediately took off for first base. The problem was that Hernandez started screaming, "Foul ball!" which caused Davis to stop running to first.
Now, the Blue Jays did complete the throw to first base successfully, but that isn't really the point. Hernandez stopped a play in progress that needed to be completed if Davis didn't foul the ball off. And then Hernandez overturned the call on a play that wasn't technically completed due to his call. If nothing worse, it's just terrible form.
Still, it's great seeing Buck in action.
