Colin Kaepernick throws harder than Barry Zito

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Friday night's Marlins-Giants game at AT&T Park. While it's not especially surprising that an NFL quarterback (and former Cubs draftee) like Kaepernick has a strong arm, it's still not often you see the hard stuff from someone wearing fashion dark-washed jeans and Air Jordans. Witness ...

Indeed, Kaepernick registered 87 mph on the gun, which is harder than Barry Zito, among others, throws these days. Most impressive of all, is that the glove-side run suggests Kaepernick was throwing a two-seamer! (Also possible: He has no control.)

Still, tweak those decidedly football-ish mechanics (needs more stride length, needs more leg drive, needs deeper release point!), and "Kap" would no doubt be sitting in the low 90s before too long.

As for the Niners, let it be said they were proud of their signal-caller's efforts ...

Note for future catchers of ceremonial pitches delivered by amped-up QBs: Consider wearing full gear behind the plate.
