Phillies setup man Mike Adams was facing season-ending surgery on his shoulder when he learned of three tears in his labrum earlier this week. After getting a third opinion, however, he's decided to go the rehab route.

Adams will get a platelet rich plasma injection in the shoulder, reports Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer. No timetable for a possible Adams return has been given yet, and that's probably because it's completely unknown at this point how he'll respond to the treatment.

Speaking of which, here's how Dr. Jonathan Cluett explains the PRP injection, via

Platelet rich plasma (abbreviated PRP) is a new treatment used for some common orthopedic conditions. PRP is a concentration of platelet cells taken from your blood, and these platelets have growth factors that may help in the healing process of chronic injuries. Growth factors are chemicals that signal the body to initiate a healing response. By injecting PRP into areas of an injury, the hope is to stimulate and optimize your body's ability to heal the chronic conditions.

Adams will get the injection from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who performed Roy Halladay's shoulder surgery.

In 28 appearances for the Phillies, Adams has a 3.96 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 23 strikeouts in 25 innings. He signed a two-year, $12-million contract with the Phillies this past offseason.
