Rays third baseman and AL-MVP candidate Evan Longoria was forced to leave Friday night's game with what was initially feared to be a leg injury. However, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times tweets that Longoria was lifted because the plantar fasciitis in his right foot had been flaring up.

That's not the sort of injury that should cause any kind of extended absence, but it's likely something Longoria will deal with throughout the course of the season.

This season, Longoria is batting .298/.367/.550 with 40 extra-base hits, and he's of course providing characteristically excellent defense at the hot corner.

Longoria, whose six-year, $100-million contract extension won't kick in until 2017, missed 85 games last season because of an injured left hamstring -- an injury that eventually required surgery.
