Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera is going to join up with Class-A Fort Wayne for a rehab assignment, and if things progress well, the Padres could have him back during their weekday series against the Red Sox, reports MLB.com.

"He's doing well," manager Bud Black said (MLB.com). "He is really getting there. ... He's probably three or four or five days away from a Padre game, but he's getting real close."

The report indicates the target is for Cabrera to join the club in Boston, where the Padres play Tuesday through Thursday.

Cabrera, 26, is one of the more underrated players in baseball. Prior to going on the DL with a hamstring issue, Cabrera was hitting .305/.382/.418 with 11 doubles, four triples, four homers, 24 RBI, 37 runs and 31 stolen bases -- all that in addition to plus defense at shortstop. He still leads the NL in steals, just like he did last season.

The Padres were 35-34 when Cabrera was put on the DL. They've gone 5-8 since.
