The Diamondbacks have placed right-hander Trevor Cahill on the 15-day disabled list because of a hip contusion. Cahill sustained the injury against the Marlins on June 19, when he was struck by a liner. He attempted to pitch through it but has struggled.

While a hip contusion isn't especially serious, it's the kind of injury that leads to "mechanical compensation" -- i.e., altering one's pitching motion in order to relieve discomfort. And that can indeed lead to a serious injury.

This season, the 25-year-old Cahill has pitched to a 4.66 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 1.77 K/BB ratio. He also leads the majors with 11 wild pitches.

The D-Backs have recalled RHP Chaz Roe to take Cahill's spot on the active roster. Roe figures to work out of the bullpen, and the team will likely make another roster move when Cahill's turn in the rotation comes up again.
