UPDATE: The White Sox have placed Crain on the 15-day DL with a right shoulder strain, the team announced. If he misses only the minimum 15 days, he'll have a little less than two weeks to showcase himself for clubs prior to the trade deadline.

White Sox setup man Jesse Crain warmed up but did not appear in Tuesday night's game due to shoulder tightness, manager Robin Ventura confirmed to CSN Chicago. He was expected to start the eighth inning before bullpen coach Bobby Thigpen alerted Ventura the right-hander didn't feel right.

Crain, 31, has a 0.74 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 36 2/3 innings this year. He has struck out 46 (11.3 K/9) while walking only 11 (2.7 BB/9). Crain gave up a run in his last outing on Saturday, the first run that he allowed since April 12. That was a span of 31 appearances and 31 innings.

The Chisox sit in last place in the AL Central at 33-47, 10 1/2 games out of a playoff spot. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com recently reported the club is "open for business" in trades, and Crain figured to be one of their top chips. He is owed an affordable $2.25 million or so for the rest of the season and is due to become a free agent this winter.

There is never a shortage of teams looking for bullpen help at the deadline, and contenders like the Red Sox, Tigers, Rangers, Braves, Pirates, Reds, Diamondbacks, Giants and Dodgers are all expected to seek a reliever or two.

Crain had surgery to repair his labrum and rotator cuff in 2007, but he has also spent time on the DL in recent years with inflammation (2009) and a strain (2012). Even if this bout of shoulder stiffness is nothing more than a nagging day-to-day thing, it's a red flag for interested clubs.
