The Mariners have designated right-hander Jeremy Bonderman for assignment. Left-hander Lucas Luetge was recalled to fill the roster spot. The team will need to come up with a replacement starter for Thursday.

Bonderman, 30, returned to the big leagues this season after not pitching at all from 2011-12 due to Tommy John surgery and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. He only made it to the mound for 252 2/3 innings from 2008-10 as well.

In seven starts for the Mariners, Bonderman went 1-3 with a 4.93 ERA and more walks (17) than strikeouts (16) in 38 1/3 innings. He made 11 Triple-A starts before being recalled, going 2-4 with a 4.52 ERA.

Given the scarcity of pitching and how willing teams are to take on reclamation projects, it seems likely Bonderman will hook on somewhere else in the second half. He might have to settle for a minor league deal at first, however.

Luetge, 26, has a 4.67 ERA in 52 big league innings between this year and last. He has held left-handed batters to a .216/.301/.289 batting line during that time.
