Padres southpaw Clayton Richard will have surgery to repair the AC joint in his left shoulder reports Corey Brock of MLB.com. The procedure is season-ending.

Richard, 29, will essentially have part of his left clavicle shaved down to prevent future problems with the joint. Tests showed no structural damage in the shoulder. He had surgery to repair his labrum, rotator cuff and biceps in July 2011.

In 11 starts and one relief appearance this season, Richard went 2-5 with a 7.01 ERA and 1.63 WHIP. He walked (21) nearly as many batters as he struck out (24) while surrending 13 home runs. That's hard to do in spacious Petco Park.

PitchFX confirms Richard was averaging 90.2 mph with his trademark two-seam fastball, right in line with recent years. If the shoulder has impacted his performance -- the results suggest it was -- it didn't show up in the fastball velocity.

The Padres acquired Richard from the White Sox as part of the Jake Peavy trade at the 2009 deadline. He went 5-2 with a 4.08 ERA in 12 starts after the trade, then went 33-32 with a 3.88 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 84 starts 2010-12.

San Diego has reportedly been in the trade market for starting pitching help, and those efforts figure to intensify now that Richard is done for the year. The Padres are in last place in the NL West at 41-52, 7 1/2 games out of a playoff spot.
