All-Star Game Remember When: Fred Lynn's grand slam

By Mike Axisa | Baseball Writer

ASG Memories: Pedro dominates | Bo steals show | Reggie's tower HR | Cal's last ride | Hubbell's Ks five HOFers

In our latest look back at All-Star Game memories, we remember the first and only grand slam in Midsummer Classic history. Fred Lynn, then with the Angels and playing in what would be the final All-Star Game of his 17-year career, did the honors during the 1983 game at old Comiskey Park:

How about those baserunners? Four-time All-Star Manny Trillo at third base, Hall of Famer Rod Carew at second and Hall of Famer Robin Yount at first. That's what makes All-Star Games fun. No wonder poor Atlee Hammaker got tagged for seven runs in two-thirds of an inning.

Box Score at Baseball-Reference.com

Lynn already had the very best years of his career with the Red Sox at this point -- he led the AL in batting average (.333), OBP (.423), and SLG (.637) in 1979 -- but he was still a quality player for the Halos. He hit .272/.352/.483 (129 OPS+) with 22 home runs in that 1983 season and remained productive for another half-decade or so.

Eighty-four years worth of All-Star Games, yet Fred Lynn is the only man to go deep with the bases loaded.
