As is usually the case around this time, AL and NL All-Star rosters are undergoing some minor changes because of injury and the way that various rotations have slotted heading into the break. On Sunday, MLB announced the following alterations ...
McCann makes the All-Star team for the seventh time. In essence, McCann takes the roster spot of teammate Freeman, who prevailed in the NL "Final Vote" over Yasiel Puig of the Dodgers. The presence of a third catcher on the roster means NL manager Bruce Bochy won't have to lean so heavily on Yadier Molina of the Cardinals, who has had recent knee problems, and Buster Posey of Bochy's own Giants.
Elsewhere, it's hard to understand why Jim Leyland chose Tillman and his 3.95 ERA over Hiroki Kuroda of the Yankees and his ERA of 2.65. Presumably, Leyland was eyeballing Tillman's 11 wins, but Kuroda has far and away been the better pitcher this season.
Note that, with Adam Wainwright slated to start for the Cardinals on Sunday night, an additional chance for the NL is likely in the offing.
