VIDEO: The original 'Home Run Derby'

Back in the late 1950s and early 1960s -- when smoking was good for us -- Home Run Derby was a television show rather than something yoked to the All-Star Game. Your host? Gentleman Mark Scott. Your setting? Los Angeles' Wrigley Field, which played host to the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League and the AL expansion Angels for one season.

In this particular episode, it's Mickey Mantle vs. Harmon Killebrew, and the stakes were high! Well, at least somewhat high on an inflation-adjusted basis:

So it's Mantle 7, Killebrew 3. Surely, the Commerce Comet has ensured victory! How can Mr. Killebrew possibly surmount such a lead? On to part two:

Miracle of miralces, the Killer prevails!

I realize that current major-leaguers probably aren't cash-poor enough to spend their offseasons doing this, but I still entertain fever dreams that Home Run Derby will one day be revived.

Make it so, America.
