Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz has a 9-0 record and has pitched to a 1.71 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and career-best 2.79 K/BB ratio this season. In other words, when he's been on the mound he's pitched at a level befitting a serious Cy Young contender. The problem, though, is that Buchholz hasn't been on the mound lately.

Because of neck and shoulder problems, Buchholz hasn't been able to see game action since June 8 and has endured a number of setbacks in his recovery. Now, you can add one more setback to the growing ledger.

Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports that Buchholz, after experiencing continued soreness during a Sunday bullpen session, won't be able to throw from a mound again until at least Thursday. That means Buchholz won't be able to begin a minor-league rehab assignment this upcoming weekend, as had been hoped.

"I'm not going to go out and do something that's going to cost me the rest of the season," Buchholz said on Monday (source: NESN). "I want to be 100 percent the next time I get on the mound, so that's what I'm going to do."

Buchholz must first work a pain-free bullpen, and then he'd like to complete a simulated game. Only then will he be able to proceed with a rehab stint. Now, the Red Sox are likely looking at getting their ace back no sooner than August, and that's assuming no additional setbacks.
