Red Sox activate Stephen Drew from disabled list

Red Sox shortstop Stephen Drew was activated from the disabled list Saturday, the club announced. As a corresponding move, infielder Brock Holt was optioned back to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Drew, 30, has been out since June 29 with a hamstring injury. He played two games on a minor-league rehab assignment, going 2 for 7 with a double.

Drew is hitting .233/.313/.409 with 14 doubles, six triples, five homers and 31 RBI in 66 games this year for the Red Sox.

With Drew coming back, it appears the Red Sox are ready to use both him and rookie sensation Jose Iglesias together. Iglesias has been the full-time shortstop with Drew out, but he's hitting .366/.416/.459 with pretty solid defense as well, so there's no reason to bench him or send him down.

Sure enough, Drew is in the lineup at shortstop and Iglesias is slated to play third in Saturday's game against the Yankees. Iglesias played 276 of his 277 games in the minors at shortstop, but he's logged 207 innings at third this season as Will Middlebrooks continues to slog through his sophomore slump (currently with Pawtucket).
