As expected, Red Sox right-hander Andrew Bailey will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, manager John Farrell announced. The skipper also said righty Clay Buchholz will visit Dr. James Andrews regarding the nagging discomfort in his neck.

Bailey, 29, was placed on the DL with a significant shoulder injury on Friday. The surgery to repair his labrum and capsule will be performed by Dr. David Altchek in New York on Wednesday. The procedure will sideline him for 12 months, so Bailey will miss a big chunk of next season as well.

In 30 appearances before the injury, Bailey had a 3.77 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. He allowed nine runs -- including five home runs -- in his last 10 1/3 innings before being placed on the DL. Torn capsules are very serious; almost no pitcher has returned to their previous form following the procedure. Mark Prior, Chien-Ming Wang and Johan Santana are among its victims.

Buchholz, 28, has been out since early June with nagging discomfort in his neck near his right shoulder. He is said to be going to visit Andrews for peace of mind, just to make nothing there is nothing more serious going undetected. Buchholz has continued to feel soreness each time he's thrown since being placed on the DL.

Prior to the injury, Buchholz had gone 9-0 with a 1.71 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 12 starts. He was so dominant that he still ranks eighth among all starters with 4.1 WAR despite being sidelined for more than a month.
