Maholm, 31, left Saturday's start with an apparent wrist injury. He has gone 9-9 with a 4.41 ERA in 20 starts for Atlanta this year, but he has been dreadful of late. Maholm has a 3-5 record with a 5.53 ERA in his last 10 starts.
Wood, 22, has a 2.45 ERA in 22 innings spread across one start and 15 relief appearances this year. The team called him up in late May. In his lone start, he allowed one run in three innings against the Mets.
Wood threw 57 pitches in 3 2/3 innings of relief in his last appearance 10 days ago, so it's unlikely he'll be able to give the Braves a full 100-plus pitch effort right away. He'll have to be stretched out.
Maholm is owed roughly $2.5 million for the rest of this season and will become a free agent this winter. Atlanta acquired him from the Cubs in a four-player trade at last summer's trade deadline.
