The season is over for Padres' starting pitcher Jason Marquis, according to manager Bud Black (via Marquis has "significant damage" to the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow -- and that's the ligament that requires the famed Tommy John surgery to repair surgically.

For now, the report states that whether or not Marquis will have the surgery is yet to be determined. Some pitchers these days go the way of a platelet-rich plasma injection instead of surgery.

Marquis, 34, is 9-5 with a 4.05 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 72 strikeouts in 117 2/3 innings this year. He was with the Padres on a one-year deal, so he'll head into next season coming off a major injury -- and possibly major surgery -- looking for work.
