Happy Anniversary: A-Rod, Varitek spark Yankees, Red Sox fight

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer

Remember when the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry was worth several fights a year? Those were the days. And nine years ago Tuesday was an absolute beauty, perhaps the most nasty aside from the Pedro-Zimmer incident.

One day after Yankees star Alex Rodriguez singled home the go-ahead run in the ninth in an eventual 8-7 Yankees win, he was plunked by Bronson Arroyo. After a few eff yous in Arroyo's direction, A-Rod was met with Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek, who allegedly and reportedly said, "we don't throw at .260 hitters."

And it was, as they say, on:

The Yankees would go on to win the AL East, but the Red Sox would topple them in the ALCS -- after losing the first three games of the series -- and then win the World Series. What a season it was.
