Rookie Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna has been placed on the disabled list retroactive to July 23 because of torn ligaments and an avulsion fracture in his left thumb. Ozuna will undergo surgery on Friday, tweets Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. His time-table isn't yet known, but it will surely be measured in weeks or months.

Ozuna was recently optioned back to Double-A Jacksonville, but he's been placed on the MLB DL.

This season, the 22-year-old, who was signed by the Marlins out of the Dominican Republic in 2008, is batting .265/.303/.389 in 70 games. Ozuna, who was called up at the end of April after just 10 games in the high minors, entered the 2013 season as Baseball America's 75th-ranked prospect.
