After just two months on the job, Hall of Famer and Royals legend George Brett has stepped down as the team's hitting coach. Brett will now resume his role as vice president of baseball operations. As the Kansas City Star notes, Brett originally agreed to serve as hitting instructor for only one month.

Brett released the following statement through the team:

"My lifelong passion after playing was not to be a hitting coach. But Dayton (Moore, the club's general manager) asked me if I would consider it, and I did, but only on the promise that it would be on an interim basis.

There is a ton of talent here, and doing this for almost two months has prepared me to be a better advisor to Dayton and his staff. This has been an unbelievable experience for me, and now I'm energized to contribute more to this organization as I return to my non-uniformed role."

Assistant hitting coach Pedro Grifol will now take over as full-time hitting coach.

For what it's worth, the Royals this season batted .261/.314/.375 before Brett took over as hitting instructor and batted .248/.309/.369 on Brett's watch. However, as Rany Jazayerli pointed out on Twitter, two of the team's core young hitters -- Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas -- did enjoy significant gains under Brett.
