Outfielder Shane Robinson was also placed on the DL with a right shoulder strain while outfielder Adron Chambers and first baseman/outfielder Brock Peterson were recalled from Triple-A Memphis in corresponding moves.
Obviously Molina is the big news here. Losing him for any length of time is very concerning for the Cardinals -- who bring a season-long six-game losing streak into Wednesday. Molina is widely considered the best defensive catcher in baseball and the pitching staff is very comfortable with him. Not only that, but he's hitting .330/.374/.479 with eight homers, 54 RBI and 30 doubles. If MVP voting were held right now, he may well win it.
The severity of the injury is not yet known, but a knee injury on a catcher is much worse than for any other position considering the nature of the job.
Until he returns, the Cardinals only have Tony Cruz and Rob Johnson as options behind the plate. With the trade deadline having come and gone, they'll stick with those two for the time being -- unless a waiver-deal in August is made.
