Angels left-hander Sean Burnett has a torn flexor tendon in his elbow and will miss the rest of the season, reports the Associated Press. The tear was found in an MRI after he felt "a little discomfort" throwing off a mound on Monday.

"He's definitely not going to pitch this year," said manager Mike Scioscia. "This is huge. You look at what Sean could do, and Ryan Madson [who has missed the entire season]. Losing them has stretched out the roles and diluted the bullpen effectiveness."

Burnett, 30, has been on the DL with elbow inflammation since late May. He missed a little more than three weeks with forearm inflammation and nerve irritation earlier this season as well. The southpaw has a history of elbow problems, including Tommy John surgery back in 2004.

In 13 games between injuries, Burnett allowed one run in 9 2/3 innings. He wasn't particularly effective against left-handed hitters -- 4-for-14 (.286) with two walks (.375) and four strikeouts -- but it was a very small sample size.

The Halos signed Burnett to a two-year, $8 million contract this past winter after he held lefties to a .211/.245/.289 batting line with 28 strikeouts and one walk for the Nationals last season. He has also pitched for the Pirates in his career.

The Angels signed Madson to a one-year contract worth $3.25 million this past offseason as well. He had Tommy John surgery before last year and has yet to return to the mound due to continued setbacks and elbow issues.
