Back in spring training 2011, veteran left-hander Dan Meyer was competing for a job in the Phillies bullpen, a job he eventually lost to fellow lefty Antonio Bastardo. Bastardo will be suspended 50 games for his ties to the Biogenesis performance-enhancing drug scandal on Monday, and Meyer is not happy:
Hey Antonio Bastardo, remember when we competed for a job in 2011. Thx alot. #ahole— Dan Meyer (@Dmy53) August 5, 2013
This is the bigger issue with PEDs. Records being illegitimately broken and stars becoming superstars is nothing compared to the dirty fringe players fighting for a roster spot. They're under an awful lot of pressure and plenty of guys are taking any advantage they can get. Baseball is their livelihood.
The majority of the 13 players who will be suspended on Monday are minor leaguers and fringe big leaguers. That's not a coincidence.
