It's time, once again, to give an all-important update on our Eye On Baseball Heavyweight Championship, details of which are as follows:
Since the concept of championship belts is cool in boxing, MMA and sports entertainment (aka pro wrestling), the Eye on Baseball team has decided to create a Heavyweight Championship belt for the 2013 season.
As the defending World Series champions, the Giants entered the season with the strap. From there, here are our rules.
1. A team must win a series from the champion to take the belt. One game isn't going to cut it, considering it's a 162-game season and teams all view the season in terms of series.
2. If the belt-holder splits a series (two- or four-game series), it retains. Much like on a draw in boxing or a count-out situation in pro wrestling, you don't get the belt unless you actually beat the champion. A tie isn't good enough.
3. If, at the end of the regular season, the belt-holder does not make the playoffs -- and due to the dynamics of this thing, that scenario is entirely plausible -- said team will be stripped of the title for not qualifying for the postseason. Then the winner of the playoffs -- the World Series -- takes the belt and the title into the offseason.
And this is about the point in time we usually point out that some people hate this idea, but instead, let us run through a sampling of the comments from last time.
Commenter "BoSox Suck" (very creative!) has the following to say:
Some reporter has too much time on his hands... how about checking Lebone and Biogenisys and a 'mysterious acquaintance of Lebone' named Mr. Paul who picked up PEDs for a LJ...
Several problems here. First, the Pirates held the belt April 28-29, as can easily be seen on our calendars (see below). Secondly, the insinuation that we somehow place the belt with high-profile teams and avoid low-profile teams is ridiculous considering our rules are clearly laid out and we've never strayed. Finally, I'm not a reporter. Other than that -- including not knowing how to spell Pittsburgh -- it was an awesome comment.
Commenter "ilprato" says this is a "waste of space."
That's cool, considering Internet space is unlimited. Remember, newspapers aren't the same as the 'net. This isn't 1985. Just ask Marty and Doc.
Anywho, here's how we've arrived at the Yankees being champions, for those with an open mind:
Next up for the Yankees: A three-game series against the Boston Red Sox. The stakes have (almost) never been higher in this rivalry than with the EOB Heavyweight Title on the line. Get your popcorn. I'm also pretty excited that we've used our powers to only make the belt available to high-profile, East-coast teams. It's a win all around, really.
