Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy issued a statement Saturday after his son, Jared, was charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Jennifer Martel, 27.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Jenn Martel and her family. Words cannot describe my wife's and my grief.

Son or not, I am at a loss for words in articulating my disgust and remorse over this senseless and tragic act.

We are heartbroken.

Jared Remy pleaded not guilty to murder Friday, and is currently being held without bail.

The alleged attack occurred Thursday night. Police were called after a report of a stabbing at an apartment complex. Remy and Martel's four-year-old child was apparently present at the time of the attack but unharmed.

Remy, 34, was arraigned Wednesday in Waltham on charges that he slammed Martel's face into a mirror, but he was released on his own recognizance. The next night, prosecutors allege, he attacked Martel inside their apartment before pinning her to the ground of the patio where he stabbed her multiple times. Neighbors tried to intervene but were driven back when Remy slashed at them.

Since 1998, Remy has faced 15 criminal charges. He has been accused of assaulting five people, four of them women. He formerly worked security for the Red Sox but was fired in 2008 as the result of a steroid investigation.
