The Mets have placed right-hander Jenrry Mejia on the 15-day DL with a bone spur in his elbow, the team announced. Righty Greg Burke was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill the vacated roster spot.

Mejia, 23, left Saturday night's start after the third inning due to discomfort in the elbow. He's dealt with the bone spur all year and was planning to have it removed this winter, but the surgery may be moved up. It would end his season. "It certainly doesn't look very good," said manager Terry Collins to reporters.

In five starts before going on the DL, Mejia went 1-2 despite a 2.30 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 6.75 K/BB. All of those rate stats are excellent in the limited sample. He had a 2.55 ERA in six minor league starts after missing the start of the season with elbow inflammation. Mejia missed most of 2011 and part of 2012 due to Tommy John surgery.

The Mets have not yet announced who will replace Mejia in the rotation, but they are off on Thursday and could skip his turn. Collins said that is not ideal because of the workload limits in place for Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler, however. Triple-A youngsters Rafael Montero and Jacob deGrom have workload limits of their own and may not be options.

New York was using a six-man rotation as recently as last week, but elbow injuries to Mejia and Jeremy Hefner leave the club short a starter. Hefner has a partially torn ligament and may not return this season.

Burke, 30, has a 4.66 ERA in 29 relief innings for the Mets and a 4.72 ERA in 26 2/3 Triple-A innings this year. He's been bouncing up and down all season.
