Back in late July, news broks that Angels slugger Albert Pujols was out a "significant amount of time" and possibly even for the rest of the 2013 season, so the announcement from the Angels Monday wasn't very surprising.

Pujols is out for the season.

Plantar fasciitis has bothered Pujols all season and rest is the only cure at this point. Offseason surgery is still possible.

Pujols, 33, hit .258/.330/.437 with 19 doubles, 17 homers, 64 RBI and 49 runs this season. In most ways, it was the worst season of Pujols' 13-year career -- it's very reasonable to call it his second straight worst season of his career, too.

The three-time MVP signed a 10-year, $240 million contract with the Angels prior to the 2012 season. He still has eight years and $212 million left on the deal. There's a 10-year, $10 million "personal services" contract that kicks in after the deal, too.
