In the fourth inning of Thursday night's game against the Pirates, Giants right-hander Matt Cain was struck on the throwing arm by a line drive off the bat of Gaby Sanchez and then promptly removed. Cain didn't appear to be in any obvious pain, but after the trainer examined him he was lifted before even trying to throw a test pitch.
Subsequent X-rays were negative, and Cain has been diagnosed with a contusion of the right forearm.
Here's the play in question:
The good news, of course, is that Cain wasn't seriously injured. Still, In what's a lost season for the reigning-champion Giants, there's no reason to take any chances with a pitcher who's locked up through at least 2017.
