Rockies closer Rafael Betancourt may have torn ligaments in his pitching elbow, reports Troy Renck of the Denver Post. Betancourt will undergo an MRI on Monday, but an initial evaluation suggests that significant damage may be present. As Renck notes, If, at age 38, Betancourt is faced with the requisite nine-to-12-month recovery period, then his major-league career could effectively be over.

Betancourt felt discomfort during the course of blowing the save on Wednesday night. "It's not good," Betancourt said. "It's very sore right now. I have gone through a lot of pain throughout my whole career, but this is completely different. I could not throw another pitch."

This season, Betancourt has pitched to a 3.54 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 2.45 K/BB ratio in 31 appearances. For his career, he owns an impressive ERA+ of 141 across parts of 11 major-league seasons.

Rex Brothers will now step back into the closer's role for Colorado.
