The Padres have designated veteran right-hander Edinson Volquez for assignment. In essence, they now have 10 days to trade or release Volquez.

This season, the 30-year-old Volquez has been awful: 6.01 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 67 unintentional walks and 39 doubles allowed in 142 1/3 innings pitched. On Friday, he gave up six runs in 2/3 of an inning against the Cubs in what was perhaps the final straw.

The Padres originally acquired Volquez as part of the December 2011 trade that sent Mat Latos to the Reds and also landed Yasmani Grandal and Yonder Alonso in San Diego.

In order to fill Volquez's spot on the roster, the Padres have recalled 27-year-old right-hander Brad Brach from Triple-A Tucson.
