Rays lefty Matt Moore has been sidelined since July 28 because of elbow soreness, but now he's close to returning to the rotation. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that Moore will make a minor-league rehab start on Thursday and, assuming that goes well, rejoin the Rays' rotation on Sept. 3 against the Angels.

This season, Moore, age 24, has pitched to a 3.41 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 2.05 K/BB ratio. While Moore's control leaves a bit to be desired at times, there's no doubting that he's kept runs off the board this season (only one unearned run allowed in 2013).

So long as he adheres to the time-table reported by Topkin and stays healthy, Moore should be a valuable stretch-drive "addition" for the contending Rays.
