Tigers third baseman and AL MVP frontrunner Miguel Cabrera was forced to exit Thursday's game against the A's with what first looked like an aggravation of his hip injury but was eventually announced as "discomfort in his abdomen." He's listed by the team as day-to-day, and CBSSports.com's Danny Knobler passes along word that Cabrera, after Thursday's win, said he'd play on Friday.

Cabrera appeared to sustain the injury while trying to stretch a single into a double in the bottom of the fifth. To start the sixth, he was replaced at third base by Don Kelly.

Here's the play in question ...

As noted on the Tigers' broadcast, Cabrera has been dealing with a strained left hip flexor for the past month or so, and more recently he's been limited by an abdominal strain.

Cabrera this season is batting .359/.450/.683 with 43 home runs and a majors-leading 130 RBI.
