Outfielder Yasiel Puig had to leave Monday's game in the sixth inning with a mild right knee sprain, the Dodgers announced. The Associated Press says he is day to day, and manager Don Mattingly told reporters he will give Puig the day off on Tuesday.
Puig, 22, apparently hurt himself on an awkward slide into third base. He missed time with shoulder and hip problems after crashing into the outfield wall earlier this year. A thumb problem cost him a few days as well, though none of the injuries landed him on the DL.
In 80 games this season, Puig has hit .351/.411/.564 with 14 home runs and 10 stolen bases. He has been benched at times for poor fundamentals -- overthrowing the cutoff man and making outs on the bases, stuff like that.
The Dodgers are currently 82-55 with a comfortable 12.5-game lead in the NL West, so they can afford to give Puig a few days off if the knee demands it.
