The Padres on Tuesday announced the signing of outfielder Will Venable to a two-year contract extension that will run through the 2015 season. The San Diego Union-Tribune puts the total value of the new contract at $8.5 million.

Venable, 30, is batting .273/.315/.503 with 20 home runs this season. Those power numbers come despite his having logged the majority of his plate appearances at run-suppressing Petco Park. For his career, Venable owns an OPS+ of 111 across parts of six major-league seasons. The Padres originally drafted Venable as a seventh-rounder out of Princeton in 2005.

Venable's extension, in essence, buys out his final two years of arbitration eligibility.
