Pirates relief pitcher Jason Grilli has been activated from the disabled list prior to Tuesday's game, the club announced.

Grilli will not, however, be reinstated as closer immediately.

"We'll use him at least a couple times in non-leverage situations to see how he fares, how he feels," manager Clint Hurdle told reporters Tuesday (via Travis Sawchik).

Grilli told reporters he was fine with not closing and that he didn't want to "interrupt" anything (via Sawchik). He's been on the shelf since July 22 with right forearm discomfort. There were some fears initially that he'd miss the rest of the season, but he's back ahead of schedule.

He appeared twice in minor-league rehab assignment action, working two scoreless innings while striking out four, walking none and allowing two hits.

Grilli, 36, has closed 30 of 31 save opportunities with a 2.34 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 66 strikeouts in 42 1/3 innings. He formed a devastating back-end of the bullpen duo with Mark Melancon prior to injury, at which point Melancon took over and has admirable handled closing duties.
