Allen Craig doesn't have fracture, is expected to return this season

By Matt Snyder | Baseball Writer

Cardinals All-Star first baseman Allen Craig was forced from Wednesday's game against the Reds and sent back to St. Louis for some evaluation on his sprained left foot. Fortunately for Craig and the Cardinals, the news was good.

He doesn't have a fracture, reporters have been notified ( There's no set timetable for his return but Craig is expected to be back this season.

Here's the play where Craig fell injured:

Craig, 29, is hitting .315/.373/.457 with 29 doubles, 13 homers and 97 RBI this season. Obviously losing him from the middle of the order hurts, but Matt Adams was waiting in the wings Wednesday night on the bench and came in to deliver two huge home runs -- including the eventual game-winner -- in a one-run, 16-inning victory over the Reds.

Adams is no Craig in the first two rate stats, hitting .269/.329/.476, but he does have 11 homers in just 231 plate appearances this season, so he's a fine power fill-in for the time being.
