Twins catcher Joe Mauer is still experiencing concussion-like symptoms, but he told Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com he still expects his return to come "sooner rather than later." He made it through live batting practice fine on Friday.

Mauer, 30, landed on the 7-day concussion DL a little more than two weeks ago after taking a few too many foul balls to the face mask. He's been resting these last few weeks and told Bollinger that despite his optimism, there is no firm timetable for his return.

In 113 games this year, Mauer has hit a stellar .324/.404/.476 (141 OPS+) with 35 doubles and 11 home runs. He has started 73 games behind the plate, his most since starting 107 games at catcher in 2010. Various injuries have hampered him in recent years.

Manager Ron Gardenhire recently acknowledged the team has discussed the possibility of moving Mauer out from behind the plate in an effort to keep him healthy long-term. First base, third base and right field could be options. He is owed more than $115 million through the end of 2018.
