Giants right-hander Yusmeiro Petit gave up almost nothing against the Diamondbacks -- his former team -- on Friday night. The journeyman retired 26 straight batters before Eric Chavez laced a solid single in front of a diving Hunter Pence with two outs in the ninth.

Petit, 28, struck out seven and threw only 95 pitches in his nine innings, so it was a very quick and low-stress game. Low-stress by near-perfect game standards, I mean. Petit went to just two three-ball counts all night, to the final batters of the eighth (Miguel Montero) and ninth (Chavez) innings.

Coming into Friday, Petit had gone 2-0 with a 3.12 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 17 1/3 innings across two starts and one relief appearance for San Francisco this season. He has a 5.37 ERA in 251 1/3 career big league innings with the Marlins, D-Backs and Giants.

Petit is in the rotation thanks to the injured Matt Cain, who is on the DL with a forearm contusion after being hit by a line drive. In his last start, Petit struck out 10 D-Backs in six innings of work. He went 5-6 with a 4.52 ERA in 15 Triple-A starts for San Francisco before being called up.

Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez threw baseball's last perfect game in August 2012 against the Rays. Cain threw a perfect game for the Giants last June against the Astros. Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum no-hit the Padres this July, immediately prior to the All-Star break.

Arizona has never been on the wrong end of a perfect game in the franchise's relatively short history, but they have been no-hit on two previous occasions. Anibal Sanchez last got them exactly seven years ago, on Sept. 6, 2006.
